How Chobani started a food manufacturing movement in Idaho
Chobani opened its yogurt manufacturing plant in Idaho's Magic Valley in December 2012, and since then Monsanto, Clif Bar, Frulact Group, Glanbia Foods, McCain Foods and Calva/Brewster have expanded their operations there or planned moves to the area. Total investment in the area since Chobani's entry totals more than $773 million and has added 5,000 new jobs to the region, Southern Idaho Economic Development Organization Executive Director Jan Rogers said. "For our region of 200,000 people to open or announce seven new projects in a 10-month time frame is pretty phenomenal. We've shattered all previous business records," Rogers said. Report: Consumers expand the snack food category
As consumers shift from regular meals to snacking throughout the day, they're doing more snacking early in the day and expanding their definition of what constitutes a snack, according to NPD Group. People still buy traditional snack foods such as fries, chips and pretzels, but they're also adding burgers, burritos, breakfast sandwiches and other main course items to the list, the report says. "[They] don't want to eat a full meal so they are snacking throughout the day. Some of it has to do with price, some has to do with craving, [and some are] too busy for a full meal," said NPD analyst Bonnie Riggs. Nation's Restaurant News (free registration) (5/5)
