Egypt did $1 billion in apparel business with the U.S. for the year ending Nov. 30, making it the 17th-largest exporter to the U.S. market. More than 1,300 websites selling sports jerseys draw 56 million annual visitors and sell about 800,000 possibly counterfeit items every year, according to data from MarkMonitor, which analyzed five popular sports brands. Counterfeiters have grown sophisticated in their efforts, which include showing pictures of genuine jerseys to make the sale and making discounts less drastic to convince buyers that the apparel is authentic.
