Almost 85% of online merchants plan to offer free shipping at some point this season, and about one-third of them expect to begin making those offers earlier this year, according to recent research from Shop.org and BIGresearch. The survey also revealed that 80% of merchants surveyed expected to launch their holiday marketing by the end of this week and, for the majority of them, marketing efforts include an investment in the company's Facebook page. Much has been made of the stellar success of daily-deal site Groupon and the growing number of competitors, but few are talking about the treasure-trove of current e-mail addresses the sites are compiling as a part of doing business. Facebook users will now be able to send personalized Amazon.com gift cards with dollar values up to $5,000 to others in their social network. The cards will appear on the recipient's Facebook page on a date designated by the sender. Amazon has built a library of 10,000 titles in its Disc+ on-demand service, which allows buyers of Blu-ray or DVD movies to watch a streaming version while they await delivery of the disc.
