  • How will the congressional shift affect e-commerce?
Republican wins in the Senate and the power shift in the House resulting from Tuesday's elections have the potential to impact a couple of key issues for online retailers, according to NRF's overnight analysis of the results. A Republican-led House is likely to simplify the Main Street Fairness Act, a bill that would make it easier to require online merchants to collect sales tax. Republicans are also expected to put online privacy issues on the back burner, although privacy will remain a priority for the White House. • Daily-deal sites amass massive e-mail lists
Much has been made of the stellar success of daily-deal site Groupon and the growing number of competitors, but few are talking about the treasure-trove of current e-mail addresses the sites are compiling as a part of doing business. While the sites don't sell their lists to third-party marketers, doing a deal on the sites allows merchants to "rent" them. "They are getting access to our customer list for that one day," said Groupon's Julie Mossler. ClickZ (11/3) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
