- German retail sales up as holiday shopping begins
The German Retail Federation, called HDE, said retail sales in the country exceeded expectations over the past weekend as consumers started buying Christmas presents earlier than they did last year. The HDE has predicted that Germans will spend nearly €77 billion in November and December, a 2.5% increase over last year. - France's Galeries Lafayette to enter China
Galeries Lafayette, the high-end department store operator based in France, has signed a lease agreement with Beijing Jinsheng Real Estate Development Co. The French company will open its first department store in Asia in the Financial Street area of Beijing. Galeries Lafayette Chairman Philippe Houze said the plan is to open as many as 15 department stores in China in the near term. The online grocery market in Britain is expected to almost double over the next five years, according to researchers. IGD analysts are forecasting that the market will reach £9.5 billion in five years, up from £4.8 billion. Consumers between the ages of 18 and 34 are driving the growth, according to IGD.
