Pirates Brands walks the plank to B&G Foods
Robert's American Gourmet Food, also known as Pirate Brands and maker of Pirate's Booty, Smart Puffs and Original Tings, is being acquired by B&G Foods for $195 million. "The acquisition of this business and its collection of growing natural snack foods marks the second addition to our snack-foods portfolio since we entered the category last October" by purchasing the Old London and New York Style brands, B&G CEO David Wenne said. Boulder Brands is now the dominant player in the gluten-free market following its acquisition of the Udi's and Glutino brands. A report by Acosta Sales and Marketing finds growing consumer interest in health and wellness, but consumers are confused about nutrition labels and there is little awareness of ranking systems like Guiding Star or Nutrition IQ. Farm bill heads toward House after Senate approval
The Senate has approved a farm bill that would trim the food stamp budget and require farmers earning more than $750,000 annually to pay more for taxpayer-subsidized crop insurance.
