PepsiCo income up 35% for the quarter
PepsiCo posted a net income increase of 35% in the second quarter, to $2.01 billion, as activist investor Nelson Peltz pushes the company to spin off its beverages and buy Mondelez. Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi spoke against a major acquisitions, but said the North America beverage unit, which saw a 2% revenue decline, is "exploring every possible alternative" to improve results. Campbell plans 200 new products, with focus on millennials
In order to meet the shopping habits and tastes of millennials, Campbell Soup Co. plans to launch more than 200 products, with a focus on fresh foods and stores' refrigerated sections instead of its flagship soups. The company will increase marketing for its Bolthouse Farms division that makes fresh carrots, salad dressings and beverages. The company also said that its soup division, supported largely by baby boomers, has begun to grow again even amid reductions in soup ads. Empire to sell 68 Safeway stores to fund acquisition
Nova Scotia-based Empire Co. will sell 68 Safeway stores to real estate investment trust Crombie REIT in a sale-leaseback deal. U.S. will conduct second investigation of Smithfield sale
The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) will conduct a second-phase, 45-day investigation of the proposed takeover of Smithfield Foods by Chinese meat producer Shuanghui International Holdings. Consumers, food safety groups and lawmakers have expressed concern that the deal could impact food safety, after Shuanghui International was involved in a 2011 tainted-pork scandal, but Smithfield CEO Larry Pope says the sale would not affect the quality or safety of the company's products. U.S., EU to harmonize standards for nutrition, food safety
