Sales of ethnic food climb at supermarkets
Grocers are stocking hotter spices and more fruit flavors, after sales of ethnic food increased 4.5% from 2010 to 2012. Such sales are expected to rise more than 20% by 2017, according to Mintel Group. Growth is coming not only from Asian and Hispanic consumers but also changing American tastes. "We were surprised to find that among non-Hispanics, people really loved certain things about the brand -- the fruit flavors, the glass bottle, the natural sugar," said David Flynn, marketing director at Novamex, maker of fruit-flavored soda Jarritos. Global chewing gum market expected to level off after 2015
A decline in the number of teenagers and children, as well as economic woes, are expected to shrink the global chewing gum market, according to Leatherhead. Overall, analysts at Leatherhead say the market grew 14% in 2012 from 2008 and should surge another 15% by 2015. However, growth is expected to moderate "following static or falling consumption levels in certain parts of the world," said Leatherhead's Jonathan Thomas. ConfectioneryNews.com (France) (7/8)

Partnerships key for corporate sustainability efforts
Partnerships are key when it comes to sustainability for food-makers, according to P&G global sustainability chief Len Sauers. P&G partners with other manufacturers including Coca-Cola, Ford and Heinz on projects such as producing more plant-based plastics. "I think the biggest challenge is this realization that there's just so much a single company can do, that we really do have to come together as partners to make meaningful change," Sauers said. Maine nears law on GMO food labeling
Maine might be edging closer to labeling food that contains genetically modified ingredients. Gov. Paul LePage has indicated support for a bill on the matter and could sign it next year. Scott Faber, executive director of Just Label It, calls a state-by-state push "costly." "It's just bad business for food companies to continue to fight in 50 states when they could ultimately work with the FDA and consumer advocates for a federal solution," Faber said.
