The rising tide of bottled water
Consumption of bottled water rose 6.2% in 2012, with the average consumer drinking 31 gallons per year, said the International Bottled Water Association. Study: Health claims on the rise
Researchers with the Department of Agriculture say 43.1% of food and drinks in 2010 were packaged with a health or nutrition claim (H.N.R.) such as being low-fat or gluten-free. "From 2001 to 2010, the percentage of sugar-related claims carried by new beverage products accounted for the biggest increase in an H.N.R. claim carried by a single product category, from 25 to 45%," wrote study author Stephen Martinez.
