Report predicts return to simpler food formulations
A trend report from New Hope Natural Media reveals growing interest in simple formulations with recognizable ingredients. "Things had gotten so complex, with these long lists of ingredients, and hyperprocessing," said Carlotta Mast, lead author of the report. "Now, you are seeing a reversion back to much simpler, whole-food-based offerings, so you might see a very short ingredient list, with all ingredients you would know as food." Ready-to-drink teas, wine present opportunity for flexible packaging
Sports drinks, teas, beer and especially wine present the flexible packaging industry with opportunities for growth, packaging analyst Joe Iorillo said. "Ready-to-drink tea might be an area of growth for flexible packaging -- this category has utilized a wide range of packaging formats from glass bottles to aluminum cans to plastic containers, so the category is not entirely wedded to one format or another in the consumer's consciousness," he said. Sources: P&G to re-enter Tide in lower-priced detergent fray
Procter & Gamble is planning to re-enter its Tide brand in the "value tier" of detergents with a low-price liquid version possibly called Tide Simple, according to this report. P&G previously tested a lower-price Tide product, but canceled it after one year due to fears it was eating into regular-priced Tide sales and creating unsatisfied customers. Low-priced liquid detergent is the only part of the laundry detergent sector that has grown since 2009. The Wall Street Journal (tiered subscription model) (9/3)
