EPA's SmartWay program aims for a greener supply chain
In addition to greening store operations, retailers are also searching for ways to make their supply chains more sustainable, says Cheryl Bynum, director of the Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay program, which helps retailers calculate and manage the carbon footprints generated by their supply chains and choose the greenest carriers for their goods. Younger Americans show greater intake of added sugars
Americans 60 and older consumed fewer calories from added sugars in food and drinks compared with those ages 20 to 59, CDC data from 2005 through 2010 showed. Researchers also found that men ate 335 calories from added sugars daily, compared with 239 calories for women. The results appear in the National Center for Health Statistics Data Brief. Dairy Freedom Act is touted by industry
Food industry groups, including FMI, GMA and the National Grocers Association, are supporting the Dairy Freedom Act, which would provide margin insurance for dairy farmers without requiring participation in a supply-management program. "Your compromise, bipartisan proposal will help dairy farmers through tough economic times, but removes an unnecessary regulatory burden on dairy businesses and provides opportunity for market expansion, new jobs and economic growth," according to a letter to lawmakers with more than three dozen signatures.
