Most consumers aren't yet comfortable purchasing appliances online, which means the sector has largely escaped the effects of showrooming, and many retailers are stocking up on their appliance supplies. Home Depot added Whirlpool's Whirlpool line and Electrolux AB to remain competitive with Sears and Lowe's. Best Buy expanded to include Viking and Thermador's higher-end stoves and refrigerators, and Wal-Mart is in the process of testing refrigerators and washing machines for sales in 45 Texas stores. - Boutiques on wheels on the rise
Retailers are taking a tip from the restaurant world and purchasing trucks to take their wares mobile. Now some bricks-and-mortar retailers are collaborating with their mobile competitors. "It's an opportunity to get (customers) into the parking lot and go to the mobile truck and we believe there's overflow traffic that goes right into the store from there," said Mike Gatti, a senior vice president of the National Retail Federation. - Tip or Skip game app tackles showrooming
Shopping app Tip or Skip is a game that lets users submit pictures from around the Web of their favorite items and potential purchases, which are then voted on by the community. The company is considering Apple's Passbook feature, which would use location-aware notifications to alert shoppers when they pass by retailers carrying the desired products and make in-person shopping more convenient. Consumers who shop at online retailers including Target, Home Depot, Macy's and Amazon can now use Socialvest's iPhone app, which gives up to 15% of the retail sales to the nonprofit of the consumer's choice. The site allows customers to chose from 1.5 million charities registered with the company.
