- Retail sales in Britain unexpectedly up in March
The UK's Office for National Statistics reported a 0.2% increase in retail sales volume, including fuel, for March. Sales declined 0.9% in February. Analysts expected sales figures to be weak following a survey by the British Retail Consortium. However, strong food sales helped lift overall sales. - Analysts expect most Indian retailers to see profit rise
An increase in consumer spending in India is expected to help boost the profit of its retailers, analysts say. However, profit at Pantaloon Retail, the country's largest retailer, is expected to be flat or even decline slightly, according to analysts. "There will be pressure on Pantaloon's margins and higher interest cost will impact its profitability," said Sangeeta Tripathi, who tracks retailers for Sharekhan. - Columbia Sportswear plans international e-commerce effort
Columbia Sportswear is planning to launch websites in Europe for both its Columbia branded products as well as its Sorel branded footwear. The company also plans to sell products online in Canada. "We see e-commerce as an important tool that helps us fulfill our responsibility to build a strong brand for the benefit of customers and all of our business partners," said Christian Finell, general manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Columbia.
