Craft sodas catch on with restaurant patrons
Restaurant guests seeking healthier beverage options are turning to craft sodas billed as "natural" and "artisan," a trend many experts say is a non-alcoholic outgrowth of the craft beer trend. "We're also seeing consistent demand for offerings that are local, small-batch, rare. Custom-soda programs are helping restaurants address these niche demands, and can be a real differentiator for millennial buyers, who have endless choices," said Datassential director Maeve Webster. Report: Specialized supermarkets take lead in industry
Supermarkets are failing to keep up with changing consumers who favor fresh food and spend less on branded consumer packaged goods, according to a report from Hartman Strategy. Chains that are succeeding are focusing on upmarket or downmarket specialization, such as Whole Foods Market or WinCo Foods, or localizing offerings, such as Wegmans Food Markets. The report says the middle-class consumer is increasingly likely to trade up or down, depending on context. MediaPost Communications/Marketing Daily (8/8)

Study: Cocoa may improve brain function
Study participants who drank two cups of hot chocolate per day for 30 days performed better on memory and thinking tests than participants who did not drink the cocoa, researchers said. "As different areas of the brain need more energy to complete their tasks, they also need greater blood flow," said Harvard Medical School's Farzaneh Sorond, lead researcher. "This relationship, called neurovascular coupling, may play an important role in diseases such as Alzheimer's." United Press International (8/7), The New Zealand Herald (8/8)

FSMA comment-period extension is formalized by FDA
The FDA issued Federal Register notices on Thursday formally extending to Nov. 15 the comment period for two of the proposed rules envisioned in the Food Safety Modernization Act: the Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption; and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food. "This is the second and final extension of the comment period for these two rules," the agency said. "The extension of the comment period also applies to the information collection provisions associated with the proposed rules." FoodSafetyNews.com (8/9)
