The retooled app also adds new ways for eateries to offer deals to Foursquare users, including "swarm specials" that let restaurants and bars offer a deal if a certain number of people check-in at the same time and "flash specials" for the first 10 or so who check in at a specific time. Despite the highly publicized bankruptcies of Blockbuster and Borders, dire predictions that the Internet would bring about the death of brick-and-mortar stores haven't come to pass. Instead, retailers are rethinking the role of the physical store in a digital age. "The physical store is going to remain central to the shopping experience, but the walls are coming down. Customers are going to want an updated, unique experience in stores, and retailers will need to figure out what exactly they want and how to give it to them," says Deloitte senior manager Lisa Gomez. The best way to reach out to mothers is to combine social media content with digital discounts and deals, writes Hollis Thomases. Moms are often social media power users, and are too savvy to be suckered by conventional advertising blitzes, Thomases writes. "Use social media and advertising together well, however, and you'll be pleased at the extended mileage you can get from your efforts," she adds. - What marketers need to know about location
Marketing consultant Kathryn Koegel lists eight things you should think about before launching a location-based campaign for your business. Think about how to combine location into your overall marketing strategy in a way that will connect with your target audience, she recommends. Google's discovery of 58 malicious applications available in its Android Market last week has spurred security experts to urge the company to do more to protect the security of the apps before they're made available to consumers. The service could mean long-term implications for video-rental company Netflix, but the pay-per-view model might have more of an immediate impact on iTunes and Amazon, said Goldman Sachs Group analyst Ingrid Chung. Federal Trade Commission director David Vladeck has urged the online advertising industry to create an effective "do not track" mechanism that allows consumers to opt out of having their online movements collected.
