- USDA finds more vitamin D and less cholesterol in eggs
The Department of Agriculture said large eggs have 185 milligrams of cholesterol on average, down 12% from 2002, and 41 international units of vitamin D, a 64% increase. Researchers said the reason might be improved poultry feed. "Positive nutritional news about eggs continues to bolster their image in the eyes of consumers," said Mitch Kanter, executive director of the Egg Nutrition Center. - Kraft and HSN sign promotion deal
HSN, the TV shopping network, has signed a multiyear deal with Kraft Foods to promote products including Maxwell House coffee and Philadelphia Cooking Creme. The program for Philadelphia Cooking Creme will be shown via Skype to 10,000 "house parties" organized by Kraft, with HSN cookware and Todd English recipes. St. Petersburg Times (Fla.) - Wal-Mart campaign puts focus back on prices, selection
Wal-Mart is launching an ad campaign reclaiming its place as the leader in low prices and broad selection, and promising to match prices from other retailers. The company recently shifted to fewer items, but is now reversing that, said President and CEO Bill Simon. He also said the company is trying out smaller store formats. "We're testing these in urban and rural markets, with and without pharmacy, with and without fresh foods," he said. "And when we get it in the right shape, we will be ready to roll out very quickly -- hundreds at a time, and maybe more." Data on 34,670 Swedish women ages 49 to 83 revealed that those who drank one to five cups of coffee per day were 22% to 25% less likely to suffer a stroke compared with those who consumed less than one cup. Researchers, whose study appears in the journal Stroke, said nondrinkers of coffee might have an increased risk of stroke but noted the study is preliminary and should not prompt changes in coffee-drinking habits.
