Kingfisher CEO Ian Cheshire, New Look CEO Carl McPhail and other retail executives said manufacturing rather than increased retail sales will help the UK economy avoid a double-dip recession. At an industry conference, retail executives said they expect it to be a difficult year. Andy Hornby, chief executive at Alliance Boots, said he expects the disposable income of consumers to remain under pressure for the next couple of years. Philip Green, the British retailing billionaire, said his company, Arcadia Group, is "having a look at what possibilities are there in terms of U.K. production." The company is considering opening factories in Britain as sourcing costs elsewhere surge. Uniqlo, the largest retailer in Japan, has donated more than £16 million worth of aid, including funds and clothing, to help victims of the country's earthquake and tsunami. Tadashi Yanai, founder and president of Fast Retailing, the parent company of Uniqlo, has also donated about £7.7 million of his own. Shopper's Stop, one of the largest publicly traded retailers in India, plans to invest about 4.5 billion rupees to open more hypermarkets and department stores. Govind Shrikhande, managing director at Shopper's Stop, said the company, which currently runs 36 department stores, plans to add another 24. The company will bolster its number of HyperCity stores from nine to 26, Shrikhande said. Bloomberg (16 Mar.) Europe's older e-commerce are dominated by the largest online retailers in the business, but some of the smaller companies are investing in Spain, Italy and some other European countries that offer opportunities. "In some of the smaller countries the Internet still only accounts for a small portion of total retail sales, and that presents an opportunity for new players to create a base."
