  • Adidas Olympics merchandise sales reach $156 million
Adidas has sold more in merchandise than it spent on sponsoring the Olympics games. "The biggest sales are coming now," said CEO Herbert Hainer. "We can see people are queuing in stores now to get their products." The brand will not sponsor the 2016 Olympics in Rio, deciding instead to focus on the 2014 soccer World Cup, which brings in significantly more revenue for the company. Reuters (02 Aug.) • India lifts ban on Pakistani businesses
The Indian government terminated a longtime ban on Pakistani businesses in an effort to improve international trade. Designers selling "lawn," a Pakistani specialty cloth, are especially optimistic about the change, as they are eager to sell their product to a market showing great interest. But the ban lift isn't a perfect solution. "This decision is a very good sign from the Indian side but they really have to lower duties on imports, not just for Pakistan but for the whole world," said Bashir Ali Muhammad, chairman of Gul Ahmed Textile Mills. "India for a long time has been too nationalistic about protecting its market." The Guardian (London) (02 Aug.) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • U.S. clothing brands permeate India through unauthorized sites
American brands including Abercrombie, American Eagle Outfitters and Aeropostale do not have stores in India, yet their products are for sale on the country's startup sites, at discounts of over 50%. "What will happen is when these (foreign) brands eventually decide to come to India they will blacklist these sites," said Darshan Mehta, chief executive of Reliance Brands. But until then, the atypical market can benefit brands by offering valuable research and data. "Currently online (shopping) in India is the way forward to test the waters for a lot of brands," said Rahul Narvekar, the co-founder of fashionandyou.com. Reuters (02 Aug.)
