  • 2 apples a day can cut women's cholesterol levels, study finds
Eating two apples a day can help older women lower their cholesterol levels, according to a study in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Postmenopausal women who ate 75 grams of dried apple a day, equivalent to two medium-sized apples, for six months experienced a 13% decline in total cholesterol levels and a 24% drop in low-density lipoprotein, or "bad," cholesterol levels, researchers found. Cholesterol levels also dropped, but not to the same extent, in women who ate an equivalent quantity of prunes. United Press International (7/26) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Healthful cooking methods maximize flavor
Stir-frying vegetables, meat and seafood in a small amount of olive oil is one option for healthful cooking, as is roasting root vegetables and poaching meat and fish. Family physician Alisa Hideg urges caution when grilling, since "burning meats can increase cancer-causing substances in your food," and says, "steaming vegetables in a basket, microwave or electric cooker is a better choice than boiling them."
