Genomatica, which developed a biotech strain of E. coli to transform sugar into a green chemical called 1,4-butanediol or BDO, has received $45 million in financing. The company plans to use the proceeds to finish a demonstration project and establish by late 2013 a facility that will focus on the production of BDO, which can be used to manufacture spandex, plastic car parts, among other products.
