Loblaws, the biggest grocery chain in Canada, launched an aggressive attack on Heinz by prominently displaying a store-brand $1.79 ketchup brand next to Heinz's $3.99 bottles. That makes sense from Loblaws' perspective, writes Paul Hunt, but puts Heinz in a squeeze. While Loblaws can use cheap ketchup as a loss-leader, Heinz has to make its money from a single product. The best bet for the ketchup giant, Hunt argues, might be to avoid getting drawn into a price war and instead to focus on retaining its cachet as an established premium brand. GMA is voicing approval of a collaboration between the Food Safety Cooperation Forum and the World Bank to expand food safety training and build a network of food safety experts. "Industry must take the initiative to improve food safety in its own operations and through a genuine partnership with key stakeholders, including governments." A study commissioned by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations says 1.3 billion tons of food produced for human consumption are lost or wasted each year. The report explains that food loss, which can happen from production through processing phases, is most important in developing countries, while food waste is mostly a problem in industrialized countries, caused by retailers and consumers. Ahold added a system, Scan It, to about half of its Stop & Shop Supermarket and Giant Food Stores locations in the Northeast. The system allows customers to scan items as they are placed in a cart, offering electronic coupons and tallying purchases.
