JB Hi Fi has started charging vendors for display space on its retail floors, a move that Harvey Norman is expected to follow. Vendors, however, are not pleased with the change. We should be no different, we are selling consumer electronics and IT and it is important that we work more closely with vendors to demonstrate their innovations," said Scott Browning, marketing director at JB Hi Fi. - Royal wedding, Easter help give UK retail sales a boost
Retail sales in Britain jumped 5.2% in April compared with the same month the previous year and on a like-for-like basis, the British Retail Consortium reported. "Easter and the Royal Wedding bank holiday provided a badly needed boost to many retailers," said BRC Director General Stephen Robertson. However, "the underlying pressures on the retail sector of climbing costs and depressed consumer spending will be problems for many months to come." Euro General Retail plans to open about six new stores in Dublin and another six across Ireland. Charlie O'Loughlin, owner of the discount retailer, said that lower rents are partially behind the company's expansion. "We stopped expanding in 2007 because the rents were so crazy. There are now more favourable rents available," he said. "We see potential to open even more stores. We are much more competitive than we were seven or eight years ago." - Carrefour and Wal-Mart find ways to build brands in India
Wal-Mart and Carrefour are striving to make further inroads into India, but the global retailers have run into numerous obstacles. Now, both are finding new ways to build their brand and improve business in India. Carrefour, for example, has partnered with the Municipal Corporation of Dehli. "This programme has helped bring positive change to the communities globally and we at Carrefour are delighted to begin this programme in India as well," according to a Carrefour executive in India.
