- Are banks becoming passé for business loans?
Thanks to "crowd-funding," peer-to-peer lending and other innovative financing options, more small businesses are finding they can bypass the bank, Laura Petrecca writes. Programs such as Lending Club and Kickstarter use the reach of the Web to match owners with investors who believe in their ideas. But as such programs multiply, more scams are sure to follow, warns lawyer Andrew Sherman. "Any time you have small-business owners desperate for capital there are going to be people with high moral ethics and integrity -- and there are going to be bottom feeders," Sherman says. NRF News | | | | - NRF video explains why consumers pay more everywhere they shop
Due to inflated costs associated with hidden swipe fees, consumers pay more at the doctor's office, more at restaurants, more at grocery stores -- more everywhere they shop, says NRF General Counsel Mallory Duncan in a recent video on swipe fees. Duncan explains how current swipe fees account for $2 out of every $100 American spend, or $427 per household each year. Federal legislation enacted last year could reduce these fees -- but the fight isn't over yet. Watch the video. - NRF backs repeal of health care employer mandate
Recently introduced Congressional legislation aimed at repealing the employer mandate provision of last year's health reform law has the full endorsement of the nation's largest trade association. "Additional health care costs cannot be absorbed," said NRF's David French in a letter to the chairman of the House Ways and Means Oversight subcommittee. "Our members are already reporting fewer hires, franchises and other retail store openings as a consequence." The American Job Protection Act, introduced last week, would use an amendment to the tax code to repeal a requirement that companies with 50 or more full-time workers provide insurance or face penalties for failing to do so. The quickservice industry has launched a lobbying effort to convince state lawmakers to pass measures to prevent local governments from regulating restaurant marketing giveaways, a reaction to a San Francisco law passed last year to ban toys from children's meals that don't meet strict nutritional guidelines.
