Executives at the New Zealand retail chain Briscoes Group said they have seen consumer behaviour shift toward increased saving and are concerned that the government's budget will spur the trend. "The impact of today's budget is difficult to predict, particularly the impact on consumers' behaviour in the face of anticipated cuts in Government spending and changes to KiwiSaver and Working for Families, but there must be belt-tightening implications for us all as New Zealand faces such a huge operating deficit," said Rosanne Meo, chairman at Briscoes. Carrefour and CompuMe i2 have struck a deal in which the UAE-based electronics and IT retailer will provide concessions in the French retailing giant's convenience outlets in the Emirates. "It is important to continue to consolidate our presence in key markets by establishing strategic partnerships and expanding to high-growth markets," said Dikran Tchablakian, chief executive officer at CompuMe i2. The retailer currently has similar shops in Virgin Megastores throughout the UAE. Namibia's Competition Commission said it is considering appealing a high court ruling that approved Wal-Mart's takeover of Massmart's operations in the country. - Richemont says sales up in all regions, led by Asia-Pacific
Richemont, the second-largest luxury goods firm in the world, said annual profits and sales surged on increased demand for its watches and jewellery. Sales were particularly strong in the Asia-Pacific region, the Swiss group said. Meanwhile, Net-a-Porter, which Richemont acquired a little more than a year ago, "generated a positive cashflow and performed above plan." Waterstone's and Amazon are both reporting increases in their sales of ebooks. Waterstone's said ebooks are now outselling hardback books by a margin of four to one. "It doesn't really surprise us as we've been quite established as ebook sellers for some two and a half years now," said John Howells, a spokesman for Waterstone's. At Amazon, ebooks are outselling both paperbacks and hardbacks. A new "contactless" payment system is enabling consumers in Britain to make purchases using their mobile phones. Jason Reese of Orange said that mobile payments are better than contactless debt and credit cards. "You can now check your balance on your mobile phone's screen and see how much you are spending, which you cannot immediately do when touching your debit or credit card on contactless readers," he said. "Feedback from the trials we have done are overwhelmingly positive, with two thirds of triallists wanting to take up the service." The Guardian (London) (20 May.)
