Global retail industry news | | - Dubai considers information service said to benefit retailers
Dubai's Department of Economic Development is considering an information service that experts said would benefit the country's retailers and mall operators. Laila Suhail, CEO of the Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment, said the information would help bolster the retail sector's growth. "[A platform] is something that's being worked on at a government-DED, level," Suhail said. "There's a very strong infrastructure when it comes to shopping malls, but there is no single platform of information for a retailer about particular malls." E-commerce Spotlight | | | | - Dell executive offers tips for succeeding in international e-commerce
Angus Cormie, Dell's director of e-commerce, Western Europe, consumer and small business, says that succeeding in international online retailing requires a balance between the right technology and a great user experience. "The challenge in managing a business this size, which, inevitably, requires high degrees of centralization, is to ensure you find a balance between 'one-size-fits-all' and local customer experience expectations," Cormie said. As retailers big and small expand their online reach to new global markets, they're increasingly faced with the complications that come from dealing in foreign currencies and learning the customer-service disadvantages of dealing solely in U.S. dollars. He said that the extensive IT experience of Tesco's executive board is a definite advantage. "Philip Clarke is, above all, a fantastic retailer more than an IT guy. But I think it is great that we have someone at the top of the organisation who really understands technology and what it can do," McNamara said. ComputerWeekly.com (U.K.) (17 May.) Milan Station, a luxury retailer of second-hand handbags, aimed to raise roughly HK$270 million from its initial public offering in Hong Kong, but about HK$58 billion worth of orders were placed, according to reports. "The size of the (Milan Station) offering is relatively small, therefore it could draw capital easily," said Linus Yip, chief strategist at First Shanghai Securities. "People think there will be short term trading opportunities. The brand is well known to a lot of Hong Kong people, making it an attractive option." Milan Station features 10 outlets in Hong Kong along with stores in Taipei, Macau and Beijing. Google/Agence France-Presse (17 May.)
