Kroger and Safeway suspended purchases from JBS Swift after Mercy for Animals filmed practices at a pork-production facility in Kamrar, Iowa.  A study found no evidence that consumption of bacon, hot dogs and other cured meat increases the risk of pancreatic cancer. More than 300,000 people filled out a questionnaire for the National Cancer Institute, which found a slightly higher but statistically insignificant risk increase for men who eat the highest amounts of preservatives used in curing. The House cut more than $200 million from $955 million proposed for the FDA's food-inspection budget for fiscal 2012. That would give the agency $87 million less than its existing level. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., said the reduction is a bad idea because as much as 20% of Americans' food comes from overseas, and "we have only the ability these days to inspect less than 2%."
