  • UK consumers shift from high street to online, index finds
The IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index shows that British consumers spent £4.8 billion online in September, a 24% surge over the same month last year. Meanwhile, high street sales declined, indicating a shift from traditional stores to online retailers. "The disparity between these figures [high street and online] reveals a very interesting trend amongst British consumers," said Chris Webster of Capgemini. The recession consumer is "one who is more value conscious, regularly purchasing private brands for basic merchandise and cross shopping among distribution channels", he writes. "The good news is that with the economy on the upswing, these same consumers are beginning to buy a little more of what they want, compared to what they need." Read more.
