  • Wal-Mart moves to expand local produce offerings
Wal-Mart announced a new program Thursday aimed at adding substantial amounts of local produce to its fresh-food shelves as part of an effort to reduce the retail giant's carbon footprint. The company's plan includes investments in infrastructure and training for small farmers in emerging markets such as China and India, and doubling the amount of local food it buys from U.S. farmers during the next five years. • Luxury Polo store aims to build brand buzz for less pricey lines
Ralph Lauren's new luxury store in New York makes its home in a 22,000-square-foot upscale Madison Avenue mansion and boasts high-end items including a $159,000 diamond necklace, all likely to appeal to wealthy international tourists. Opening a high-profile flagship can be a money-losing proposition at the individual store level but reap overall rewards from the masses of average consumers who become inspired to buy the brand's more attainably priced department store lines. • Wal-Mart's size makes it more of a target than Target
In cities across the country, groups opposed to expansion by Wal-Mart don't show the same anger when Target comes to town, The Wall Street Journal reports. By virtue of its position as the world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart often fights tough opposition such as a recent six-year battle to win approval for a second store in Chicago, a market that's already home to 10 Target stores, including seven that compete directly with grocery stores. Within the retail industry, Wal-Mart provides a better-than-average health care plan, with 80% of its employees eligible. The Wall Street Journal (10/14) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
