  • Retailers consider the "unconscious mind" of consumers
More than 1,100 representatives from around the globe attended the World Retail Congress 2010 in Berlin this week. Robin Wight, a legendary advertising executive, brought the meetings to a close by asking retailers to consider consumers' "unconscious mind". "You have two minds, people are in two minds about everything. If you are not looking at the unconscious mind, then you are not getting to the truth," Wight said. Retailers need to understand that the unconscious mind is the key to consumers' decision-making and adapt, he said. The Economic Times (India) (29 Oct.) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Different challenges are faced by retailers around the world: Industry representatives at the World Retail Congress spent a lot of time discussing the idea of expanding their presence, with India and China emerging as top prospects. Bijou Kurien, president of Reliance Lifestyle, explained how conducting business in India differs from other countries. "Some like it, some hate it, but all are surprised by it," he said, citing an example: "India has the largest number of illiterate people and the second-largest group of trained engineers in the world."   Retail in Europe

  • High street sales in Britain continue to increase
The Confederation of British Industry said high street sales rose this month for the fourth straight month. However, the increase was slower than expected. "High street sales in aggregate have performed well again this month, but sales of durable household goods have slowed noticeably, in line with more subdued housing-market activity of late," said an analyst at the CBI. "Retailers expect sales growth to continue next month, in the run-up to Christmas." Telegraph (London) (28 Oct.) , BBC (28 Oct.) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
