  • Delhaize will bring down the Bloom banner
Delhaize Group said it will eliminate the Bloom banner, launched in 2004. The company will convert 42 Bloom stores to Food Lion locations and close the remaining seven. Delhaize also will close 113 Food Lion stores. Bloom focuses on convenience, selling prepared food and using technology such as hand-held scanners. However, "the macro problem with Bloom is, how do you support from an expense standpoint a new banner that doesn't really have any meaningful market share anywhere?" said Neil Stern, a senior partner at McMillanDoolittle. • Target holds off on selling credit card receivables
Target suspended a plan to sell its portfolio of credit card receivables until late 2012 or early 2013. Instead, the retailer will focus on repaying about $2.8 billion to JPMorgan Chase. "We believe a pause in discussions until later in 2012, combined with repayment of the Chase Card Services financing, will enable Target to reach an agreement with a high-quality financial partner on acceptable terms," said Target Chief Financial Officer Doug Scovanner. • Retail CEOs share leadership lessons
Retail chief executives change jobs 30% more often than Fortune 1000 CEOs across all industries, Russell Reynolds Associates director Brenda Malloy told attendees at the closing session of Retail's BIG Show. Often, though, it's not the leader that needs to change, said Saks CEO Stephen Sadove. "Direction and culture are the two most important things that as leaders we have to focus on." • How to pay yourself without endangering your business
Small-business owners like Greg Quinn, the founder of interior-design company X-Design, sometimes struggle with deciding how much revenue to take out of their businesses to pay their own salaries. "Entrepreneurs often fail to realize that a business in its growth stage needs all its cash flow to grow the business," said Dave Cook of KPMG. After you get paid, your businesses should have at least a little extra money left over to handle emergencies, said Mike Michell of the Royal Bank of Canada. • President likely to talk visa reform in Florida
President Barack Obama's quick trip to Disney World today is likely to focus on travel, tourism and visa reform, which is one of NRF's top priorities. Obama is expected to make permanent a pilot program that cuts clearance times at checkpoints for pre-approved travelers and adds more positions at visa offices in Brazil and China. "The White House has gotten the message for a long time about value of reforming the visa process," said NRF senior vice president David French. • How to balance emerging technologies with loss prevention risk
Retailers need to plan for every inevitability -- and introducing emerging technology to your store can bring with it a plethora of new options for criminals. But the rational minds who work in retailers' IT and loss prevention departments have a few thoughts and concerns before you purchase iPads for all of your in-store staff and eschew paper receipts in favor of digital ones. Executives from Ann Taylor, NRF and Sears shared some cautionary insights this week at Retail's BIG Show. Read more. Retail's BIG Blog (1/18) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • How ModCloth "democratizes" fashion through social media
There may be no retailer on Earth more personalized than ModCloth, a women's retailer that uses crowdsourcing to attract "fanatic customers." In a recent Retail's BIG Show session on new merchandising strategies, ModCloth CMO Kerry Cooper described the many ways that the company interacts with its core customer -- a fashion-forward young girl or woman who doesn't want to dress like everyone else.
