Supan to become Grupo Bimbo acquisition
Grupo Bimbo, a Mexican baking company, will purchase Ecuadorean bread baker Supan to end a debate over Supan's use of the Bimbo name in Ecuador. Grupo Bimbo's 2013 sales were $13.5 billion and the acquisition will be the company's first in Ecuador; it does business in North America, Latin America, Spain and Portugal. Are gluten-free products crowding the snack aisle?
Sales of gluten-free products rose 47% in 2013, and about half of those sales came from cookies, crackers, salty snacks and snack bars, according to David Sheluga, Ardent Mills director of commercial insights. "We're starting to get a bit saturated I think with [gluten-free] snack products. I'd like to see a little bit more distribution of other types of product categories," Sheluga said.
