Kraft Foods is asking city officials in Fort Smith, Ark., for a tax break related to a proposed 28,000-square-foot expansion to its 389,000-square-foot Planters Peanuts facility. The expansion would not add jobs, said a Kraft official, but it would make the "location more competitive when Kraft Foods considers internal sites for future expansion." An FDA staff report released Friday said that AquaBounty's genetically-altered salmon is as safe as conventional salmon for humans and the environment. In an analysis posted on its website, the agency said that the product carries higher levels of insulinlike growth factor 1 but it poses no significant risk when consumed by humans. The analysis was prepared for a meeting to be held later this month where FDA officials will consider approving the sale of the fish to U.S. consumers.
