The success of Orabrush, a tongue-brushing device that has generated $1 million in sales after being the subject of a popular YouTube clip, is an example of how small businesses are leveraging the video site to get retailers' attention. Chief executive Jeff Davis, a former Procter & Gamble executive, described the process of the "reverse" of the traditional model of lining up retail channels first and then marketing to the public. Akamai Technologies has created a service that scrambles sensitive credit card information for online merchants worried about liability under the Payment Card Industry standards. Using a process called "tokenization," Akamai's technology sends the credit card information through the payment channels in a scrambled format that's not readable by humans, the company says. According to a new Shop.org report, conducted by Forrester Research, nearly three-quarters of retailers surveyed are already sending merchandise abroad from their home country's distribution center. The study also found that retailers in the U.S. who ship abroad report that approximately 5% of their revenue comes from foreign orders. "A small but savvy group of web retailers is recognizing the promising opportunity in international expansion," said Forrester's Sucharita Mulpulru.
