- Russia's X5 completes acquisition of rival chain
X5 Retail Group, a leading food retailer in Russia, has acquired Ostrov, a rival supermarket chain. The deal, which includes 16 stores in or near Moscow, strengthens X5's position in the competitive market. X5 is also working to acquire Kopeika, a top-10 retailer in Russia. Nicolas Berggruen, a billionaire investor, said he has budgeted €400 million to spend on the Karstadt retail chain in Germany. Despite posting a significant profit increase, Hennes & Mauritz said it will slow its store openings. Kishore Biyani, chief executive officer at India's Future Group, said the company has enhanced its online offering and is poised to relaunch. "We launched our e-commerce venture three-four years ago, but we did not discover the right model. We are relaunching the venture again," Biyani said. "In [the] next four-five years, I believe e-commerce will be account for at least 10% of our physical retailing." Taobao.com, the biggest online retailer in China, is poised to bolster its position as it works on a new search engine.
