A study in the American Journal of Cardiology found that men in their 60s who had the highest levels of HDL, or "good," cholesterol were 28% less likely to die before age 85 than men with the lowest levels. Researchers also found that each HDL increase of 10 milligrams per deciliter corresponded with a 14% reduced risk of death by age 85. The FDA is considering tighter rules on raw-milk production and sales, but advocates say the dedication to hygiene practiced by small farmers makes the unpasteurized milk they sell at least as safe as the "superheated" varieties. An FDA spokeswoman says the agency is looking at whether the aging requirements for cheese -- which is legal if aged at least 60 days -- "are sufficient to minimize pathogens."
