Same-store sales at Home Depot stores rose 4.2% in the third quarter, compared to the same period last year, driven in part by higher spending related to Hurricane Irene on the East Coast and higher demand for home-improvement materials in the west, the company said. Consumers are continuing to spend on home-maintenance projects and starting to shop more for bigger-ticket items such as kitchen cabinets, the company said. - Retailers' earnings reflect income divide
Cash-strapped Wal-Mart customers bought fewer staples after prices went up a few cents, while well-heeled consumers whose wealth is largely tied to the stock market paid full price for designer styles at Saks. Both retailers reported an uptick in same-store sales this week, but Wal-Mart's profits were pinched because the chain said it opted not to pass along all of its price increases to customers. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (11/15) - How the economy has changed luxury retail
The luxury market shifted in 2008, when even the wealthiest consumers shied away from conspicuous consumption in favor of quality and practicality. "It means the best in design, quality, craftsmanship, service and pedigree. If a brand can deliver that at a lower price, consumers love that even more because they feel they are optimizing value. Coach, Apple and Zappos are examples of that trend," said the Luxury Institute's Milton Pedraza. Forbes (11/15) - Luxury retailers rush to meet growing demand: Luxury retailers are enjoying a renewed ability to charge full price as wealthy consumers continue to spend. "If it's a new product and they're excited, they buy it. And the relative pricing of that is immaterial," said Ralph Lauren COO Roger N. Farah. International Business Times (11/15)
 - Stores say digital receipts help curb fraud
More stores are moving from paper to digital receipts, a practice some shoppers find convenient and others say gives stores access to too much of their personal data. Merchants say digital sale records make returns easier and cut down on fraudulent returns, which are expected to cost merchants $14.37 billion this year, according to NRF. CreditCards.com (11/15) - Nordstrom aims for convenience with new app
Nordstrom rolled out a new iPhone application this week and plans to debut an Android version by Thanksgiving. The app is focused on creating a more convenient shopping experience for the customer, the retailer says, with a host of features including a button that brings up the shopper's mobile camera to scan bar codes. Policy & Government Affairs | | | | | | - Supercommittee's lack of progress worries businesses
A congressional supercommittee's apparent lack of progress toward the goal of finding $1.2 trillion in deficit reductions before next week's holiday has businesses concerned. Retailers worry that the lack of progress could cast a pall over the holiday shopping season. Retailers also worry that taxes will rise and federal spending decrease over time, which could contract consumers spending, said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay.
