  • Big-box chains think smaller as they seek to serve the masses
Discount-chain giants Target and Wal-Mart have stepped up efforts to localize their marketing and personalize offers to meet the needs of more customers, Forbes reports. Both chains have begun tailoring merchandise mixes in each store to better suit the needs of the communities they serve, and Target's online efforts now include a customizable electronic version of the chain's weekly circular that lets users create sale alerts for their favorite products. • Retail space to fill up further next year
Retail space for lease at U.S. malls and shopping centers will decline in 2011, the first drop in six years, as shoppers start spending again, according to a forecast from the CB Richard Ellis Group. The availability rate started heading up in 2006, at the start of the mortgage crisis, and continued as the closures of large chains such as Circuit City created a glut of available space. • Surging yen could change Japan's model for luxury goods sales
Foreign luxury goods retailers have been able to charge the "Japan premium" as consumers in the Asian nation have high incomes and a large appetite for such products. That system appears to be falling apart, partially because of the rising yen, which is prompting third-party websites to enter the market with significant discounts. • Amazon challenges manufacturers to move to "frustration-free" packaging
Amazon has ramped up efforts to persuade the makers of the products it sells to move away from the complicated plastic packaging that often proves frustrating to consumers. The online retailer, whose efforts to move toward so-called frustration-free packaging began about two years ago, is now using angry reviews from customers to persuade manufacturers to make the switch. Leaving out the plastic makes packaging easier to manufacture and recycle as well as simpler to open, the company says.
