Chinese sports-apparel maker Li Ning plans to expand its U.S. sales this year to win market share from rivals including Adidas and Nike. Li Ning partnered with Chicago-based Acquity Group, which will design an ad campaign to begin in the spring. The company sells its products through Champs Sports and Foot Locker's Eastbay chain and opened a showroom in Portland, Ore., last year. Chains including Wal-Mart and Macy's shared their experiments in RFID with attendees of NRF's Big Show last week. The technology has matured since Wal-Mart began using RFID chips to track pallets from warehouses to stores in 2006, and last year the chain added chips that track individual pairs of jeans and underwear to the point of sale. - Starbucks customers can pay with a swipe of their smartphones
Starbucks is launching a system this week that allows customers to pay for their orders by swiping their BlackBerrys, iPhones or iPod Touches in front of scanners in all 6,800 of the chain's U.S. stores and its 1,000 Target locations. Users need to download an app to access the system, which deducts the amount of the tab from their Starbucks accounts. In a letter to lawmakers, NRF urged congressional leaders to support a vote to repeal last year's health-care reform law, saying the measure has already begun to discourage job creation. The House is scheduled to vote Wednesday on H.R. 2, the "Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act," and a resolution that would instruct committees to begin developing substitute legislation.
