Independent bookstores, whose sales compose about 10% of the overall market, are creating websites that sell printed and electronic books at prices that rival those of Amazon and Barnes & Noble. The website launches are among the latest moves in an effort to survive in a rapidly changing industry. "We have to figure out how we stay in the game," said Beth Puffer, the director of the Bank Street Bookstore in New York City. The New York Times (free registration) (1/23) - Fast-fashion brands break new ground in the U.S.
Apparel chains including Sweden's H&M, Spain's Zara and Japan's Uniqlo have been expanding their presences in the U.S. and winning fans to their fast-fashion retail models. The moves have spurred U.S. department and specialty merchants to step up their game, analysts say, including J.C. Penney, which introduced European fast-fashion brand MNG by Mango last fall. The line, set to roll out in 600 stores this year, introduces new looks twice a month. Investor's Business Daily (1/21) - Urban malls revitalize as more merchants head for cities
