Teenagers who consumer the most sugar-sweetened food and drinks have 9% higher levels of LDL, or "bad," cholesterol, and 10% increased triglyceride levels over those who consume the lowest amount of added sugar, researchers found. The study also shows that teens with the highest intake of added sugar exhibit symptoms of insulin resistance, which is a risk factor for diabetes.
