Holiday sales in Canada rose as much as 4% in 2010, exceeding expectations, Ernst & Young reported. However, 2011 will be more challenging for retailers as competition increases. "Retail sales are expected to rise again in 2011, but Canadian retailers will face greater competition from foreign entrants who are determined to claim a share of Canada's reviving consumer market," said Daniel Baer of Ernst & Young. - Feedback helps Debenhams understand its customers
Debenhams used a customer insight programme to hear from hundreds of thousands of its customers. The responses are helping Debenhams make improvements as it gains insight into what its customers value. "The idea was to replace our mystery shop programme to get feedback from actual customers, rather than paid-for mystery shoppers, on all aspects of their experience with Debenhams, in real time," said Kate Whittaker, strategy manager at Debenhams. Waitrose said it would open 39 new stores, which will create about 3,000 new jobs. The upscale retailer opened 20 stores last year. - Sales fall at Fast Retailing's Uniqlo stores in Japan
Fast Retailing's Uniqlo stores in its home market of Japan continued to decline in December. Uniqlo has increased competition from Shimamura and Aeon, which sell thermal clothing products similar to Uniqlo's Heattech line. Fast Retailing's shares fell on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Comercial Mexicana, a Mexican retailer known as Comerci, said it wants to revive its expansion programme after reducing its debt to less than $1 billion over the next few years.
