Eros Group, a retailer of consumer electronics in the United Arab Emirates, plans to establish itself in Qatar before the emirate hosts the FIFA World Cup in 2022. "We expect a lot of B2B business," said Deepak Babani, CEO of Dubai-based Eros Group. "Flat panel [televisions] for the stadiums, and for the hotels." Babani said the company aims to open its first store in Qatar by year-end. - Effect of snow on UK retailers' sales questioned
BDO figures, based on thousands of UK retailers, show year-on-year sales fell 0.5% in the five weeks to Jan. 2. The figures, which exclude food, raise questions about retailers' claims that their sales were significantly reduced by the severe winter weather. "The snow definitely had an effect, but you can't just say 'I did badly because the snow came'. There are people who have done well over Christmas," said Don Williams, head of consumer markets at BDO. HMV Group's core markets have declined as digitisation of books and music take over. The situation has prompted the retailer to close roughly 40 HMV stores and 20 Waterstone's shops. HMV CEO Simon Fox blamed severe weather the last weekend before Christmas for making it impossible for the company to make up for earlier sales losses. He said HMV Group is diversifying to survive. - Shanghai's Jing An Bakery plans big expansion
Jing An Bakery plans to capitalise on increased demand for freshly baked goods by expanding its chain from 61 stores to 1,000 over the next few years. The company, a division of the largest hotel-chain operator in China, plans to finance the expansion with money raised by an initial public offering in Hong Kong.
