Environmental groups have applauded Scotland's move to reduce use of plastic bags by charging for them in supermarkets, but business groups are raising concerns about the economic effects. "It's hugely encouraging that so many people are now taking this issue seriously, and over the past five years we have seen a lot of progress in cutting plastic bag use, both by shops and shoppers," said Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead. "We want to phase out the use of free plastic bags in supermarkets, with the continued help of retailers." Sainsbury's is taking on Tesco and ASDA by offering a "Brand Match" price guarantee covering grocery baskets of goods.
