 - Chicago's "food deserts" attract more grocers
Grocery aisles in Chicago's most under-served neighborhoods rose 11% in the past two years, but there's still a scarcity of fresh food options in some of these "food deserts," according to a study by Mid-America Real Estate Corp. In the city as a whole, full-service grocers including Dominick's and Jewel-Osco lost space, while discounters including Aldi and Save-A-Lot gained, and gourmet grocers such as Trader Joe's and Whole Foods opened nine new stores in the two-year period. Despite concerns that consumers would begin pulling back on their spending, the back-to-school season started with a bang as consumers hit the stores in July to take advantage of promotions on apparel, electronics and school supplies. Retail industry sales in July increased 0.3% seasonally adjusted from the previous month and 4.0% unadjusted year-over-year, according to NRF. "July retail sales make one important point clear -- it's very hard to ignore the resilience of the American consumer," said NRF Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz.
