  • Online entrepreneur reaps success with Shabby Apple
With a few pencil sketches in hand, graduate student Athelia Woolley approached a factory about producing her sleek, vintage-inspired women's dresses. Three years later, selling only through her Shabby Apple website, Woolley is turning a profit on $1.4 million in annual sales. Low prices are a key to her success -- pieces are sewn in Guatemala and typically retail for less than $100 -- as is marketing through "mommy bloggers." "Blogging worked better because it is more powerful than traditional advertising," she says, noting that not a single sale resulted from an editorial mention in Lucky magazine's online version.   Legislative & Regulatory
  • FCC adopts new rules for Internet service providers
In a 3-2 party-line vote, the Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday approved rules to prohibit certain restrictions on the flow of content by Internet service providers, such as cable and phone companies. Some aspects of the rules do not apply to wireless companies, and ISPs will have some opportunities to create "fast lanes" for content providers willing to pay for them, provided the relationships are disclosed. The new rules are expected to face challenges in the courts and in Congress.
