    With coffee futures in New York up 61% this year, Kraft Foods has for the third time in 2010 raised prices on its Maxwell House and Yuban coffee brands. Prices for ground coffee were increased 12% and instant coffee was raised 4% because of "significant and sustained" commodity cost increases, said a spokeswoman.   • DuPont unit to gain licensing rights to Syngenta's biotech corn trait
    Syngenta said it has agreed to nonexclusively license to DuPont's Pioneer Hi-Bred unit its Agrisure biotech trait designed to resist rootworm in corn. Pioneer plans to use the trait in developing its second-generation Optimum Acremax seeds, which are expected to hit the market in 2012, a spokeswoman for Pioneer said. The deal is set to take effect in January and entitles Syngenta to receive as much as $400 million in payments from Pioneer.   • CDC: 1 out of 6 Americans suffers from food-borne illnesses each year
    The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that food-borne illnesses sicken one out of six Americans -- 48 million people -- and cause 128,000 to be hospitalized and 3,000 to die each year. Norovirus and salmonella account for most cases. The Food and Drug Administration said such numbers for preventable cases are unacceptable and could be reduced with more prevention-oriented and science-based initiatives.
