  • Food companies share knowledge with charitable organizations
A survey of the 300 largest U.S. corporations found a 13% increase in charitable cash donations between 2009 and 2010, but also a 22.5% increase in product and service donations. Wal-Mart, for example, helped a food bank in Florida improve its warehouse process so it could store and sort food more efficiently. Other food companies that made 50% or more of donations in products last year included Tyson Foods, Kraft Foods and ConAgra Foods. USA TODAY (7/25) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Food-price increases are accelerating
The latest consumer prices report found a 4.8% increase in the price of groceries for the 12 months ending in June, up from a 4.4% 12-month increase reported in May. With prices for corn, rice and sugar up more than 60% in a year, "we remain concerned that food inflation could move beyond 5% year-over-year in the back-half, which may spark a more promotional environment and pressure margins," said an analyst.
