Dixons and Harrods have struck a surprising deal in which the mass-market electronics retailer will run the electronics department at the Knightsbridge landmark. • North Ireland group opposes proposed tax on large retailers
The Northern Ireland Retail Consortium is arguing against a proposed tax on major retailers. "Town centres do need reinvigoration and investment, but the proposed large retailer levy is a blunt instrument which would do more harm than good," said Jane Bevis, director of the consortium. "Enabling the creation of business improvement districts instead would allow retailers to get directly involved with specific initiatives." Belfast Telegraph (Northern Ireland) (26 Jul.) • India is in midst of second coming of e-commerce
India's e-commerce industry fell hard in 2000 when the Nasdaq crashed. "There were almost 1,000 e-commerce businesses in India at that time. All of them closed down," said K. Vaitheeswaran, the CEO of Indiaplaza. More than a decade later, the country is starting to see a revival of its online retailing industry. Forbes (India) (25 Jul.) • Amazon set to ride second e-commerce boom in India: Amazon.com is in discussions with e-commerce players in India as it aims to enter the market, possibly as early as the beginning of next year. • Xiu.com gives foreign luxury brands a presence in China
George Ji Wenhong, an entrepreneur, and Huang Jin, a private equity investor, launched Xiu.com in 2008. Rather than spending a lot of money on advertising, the two relied on word-of-mouth to generate buzz about the online retailer. Then they used the funds they had raised to recruit global buyers to procure luxury brands that didn't have a presence in China. Ji and Huang's pitch to the brands was that Xiu.com, which was already on the ground in China, could sell their products without the extraordinary shipping fees that can make products prohibitively expensive.
