  • GOP provision would delay regulation of food ads for children
Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo., has proposed requiring a cost-benefit analysis before voluntary guidelines can go into effect for food ads aimed at children, saying the standards "would lead to extraordinary pressure from the federal government." Other Republican lawmakers say the guidelines overreach by covering too many foods, including healthy ones such as whole wheat bread. • Green tea slightly reduces LDL cholesterol, analysis shows
Green tea lowers LDL, or "bad," cholesterol by about 2% but has no effect on HDL, or "good," cholesterol, according to an analysis of trial data by researchers at China's Peking Union Medical College. The report, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, says chemicals called catechins reduce absorption of cholesterol in the gut. Researchers cautioned that while green tea can be part of a healthy diet, it should not replace medication in people who have high cholesterol. Reuters (7/6) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

Jack Kingston, R-Ga., said the food supply is "99.9% safe" so there is no need to increase the budget. GMA's Scott Faber said FDA rules developed in the next two years will "shape food safety for the next few decades." Bloomberg (7/6) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
