J.C. Penney's announcement this week that Apple store executive Ron Johnson will be its next CEO hints at the chain's plans to reinvent itself and make the department stores more relevant in an online shopping age. Other retailers have attempted to revamp their concepts with varying degrees of success, including Macy's, which put an emphasis on new, exclusive apparel lines, and PetSmart, which added grooming and other services that online merchants can't offer. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (6/15) - H&M sees success with interactive social strategy
H&M's global head of digital media Jordan Nasser saw early the power that Facebook and other social sites have to spark conversations that build relationships and long-term customer loyalty. In 2006, Nasser created a Facebook page where brand fans quickly began a dialog about when they might see stores in their markets. Today, the chain has 7.4 million Facebook fans. "Everything we do should be interactive in some way. This increases the time spent online and our sales." The trend has boosted business for mannequin makers, including Colorado-based Fusion Specialties, whose sales rose 48% last year. Young consumers in France are trading in their Chanel jackets for American-style tailored sweatpants and increasingly flocking to new stores from U.S. chains including Abercrombie & Fitch, where about 150 consumers waited in line to enter the new Paris flagship recently. Chains including Gap, Banana Republic and Victoria's Secret are planning expansions in Europe, where profits are higher because goods are more expensive and shoppers expect to pay full price. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (6/15) - Beauty sales are looking good

"Despite the current economic situation, the beauty industry continues to trend upward, showing growth for the fourth consecutive quarter in both the food/drug/mass and prestige channels," said Diane Nicholson, an NPD executive. Texas State Troopers pulled over a rental truck in a routine traffic stop in 2003, only to discover $31 million in baby formula stolen from several area stores. The find highlighted the public safety dangers of organized retail theft and spurred the state's retailers and law enforcement agencies to band together to create an education and information program, Joe Williams of the Texas Retailers Association told attendees at NRF's Loss Prevention Conference. Haberman, a Massachusetts grocery executive who started his career at Hills Supermarkets and went on to become president of Hills-Korvette Supermarkets and then CEO of Finast, died Sunday at age 81.
